Composting + Your Dream Garden

Gardening can seem like a daunting task, especially for those of us with little free time. The best way to save time, money and get "prize winning" results? Composting.

So what is composting anyway? Composting is simply a boost to the circle of life. The earth breaks down organic materials into rich soil that will then support new growth. Composting is a process that speeds this cycle up. The easiest way to do this is to purchase a composting bin, layer it with yard trimmings, (brown matter) and then layer it with your {organic} fruit peels, veggies, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags and paper, (green matter), keep it moist with a little water and turn all the material about once a week. In just a little while, you will have plenty of decadent soil! Pretty cool right?! For more info about how to start composting click here.

Read below for the top 5 reasons why you should be composting:

1. You're keeping organic waste out of landfills. Wait, so why does it matter if you throw your orange peels in a black trash can? The black trash waste goes into landfills which is broken down through an anaerobic process. This means no oxygen is used in processing and methane gas is then produced from this waste, which is terrible for the environment. Even if you don't have a compost option, (like condo living) you should be throwing those fruits and veggies in a green trash can!

2. You can transform your soil. Composting will quite literally create alchemy in your backyard. With composted, rich soil you can change the quality of the dirt around your home to support healthy plant life. Many of us in SoCal have sandy or clay soil around our homes and composting is the best way for us to grow gardens that will be the envy of all our neighbors.

3. You will save money. If you want a healthy garden but don't want to take the time to compost, you will have to buy expensive soils and manures to support your new plant life. With composting you can take the scraps from your fruits, veggies, eggshells, plain paper and yard trimmings and make plenty of soil. Basically, you just put your garbage to good use!

4. Your fruits, veggies and herbs will be more nutritious. If you are putting in all the effort to grow your own food, you want it to be as supercharged with vitamins and minerals as possible, right? The best way to do this is with natural and organic composting. Fact: Pesticides actually strip fruits and veggies of their nutrients. No thanks.

5. You are teaching your family about the circle of life. In today's tech savvy world we become more and more detached from Mother Earth. Spending time in the garden and teaching our family about growing food and plants connects us with the miracle of life, which will then make us all the more grateful for what we eat. Suddenly a single ripe tomato becomes a big deal and tastes more delicious.
